Student Workshop on Youth Activism for Global Change

A young generation across the world confronts a bleak landscape of environmental depredation, political dysfunction, and economic insecurity. For the first time in modern history, a significant part of the world’s young population cannot assume that the future is likely to be effortlessly better than the past. The bleak prospect has galvanized many young people—locally, nationally, and internationally—into activism and modes of thought that older people either disdained or ignored, particularly in the context of the climate crisis.
What are outstanding historical and contemporary examples of youth activism for the common good? What transnational strategies might make such activism more effective? What kinds of intellectual resources—ranging from local knowledge to cosmopolitan thought—might support such efforts in practice?
This workshop will feature both a panel discussion and breakout groups that explore concrete ways to advance youth activism as a transnational force for positive change.
This event is part of the Georgetown Global Dialogues, which feature leading intellectuals from the Global South in forward-looking conversations with U.S.-based thinkers across a range of topics. It is co-sponsored by the Beeck Center for Social Impact + Innovation and Office of Sustainability at Georgetown University.
